A tragic series of events unfolded overnight in Glendale after police say a woman shot at her husband outside a sports bar before later killing her two children and herself at a nearby home in the West Valley. The incident remains under investigation by both Glendale and Phoenix police departments.
According to Glendale Police, officers were first called to Tailgaters Sports Bar & Grill near 61st Avenue and Bell Road shortly after midnight on Monday. A man contacted police and reported that his wife had arrived at the bar and opened fire on him before leaving the scene in a gray SUV.
When officers arrived at the bar, they discovered a woman suffering from a gunshot wound to the back of her head. Police said the injured woman was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive her injuries. Investigators have not yet clarified whether the victim was an unintended bystander or involved in the confrontation in some other way.
After the shooting at the bar, the husband reportedly told officers that his wife had sent him text messages threatening to harm their children. He informed police that his wife and the children were located at a home near 49th Avenue and Paradise Lane, prompting officers from both Glendale and Phoenix to rush to the residence.
Police said the situation escalated further when the husband received another text message containing a photo showing one of the children bleeding from the head. After receiving the image, officers immediately entered the home.
Inside the residence, officers found the mother and both children dead from what police described as apparent gunshot wounds. Authorities believe the mother fatally shot the children before taking her own life.
The identities and ages of the mother and children have not yet been publicly released by investigators. Police confirmed that the woman found dead inside the home was also the suspect connected to the earlier shooting outside the Glendale bar.
Officials said there continues to be a large police presence at both crime scenes as investigators process evidence and interview witnesses. Phoenix police are leading the murder-suicide investigation connected to the home, while Glendale police continue investigating the shooting outside the sports bar.
Authorities described the investigation as active and ongoing. Because the incident occurred during the Memorial Day holiday weekend, police said additional details are expected to be released later on Tuesday.
The case has shocked many throughout the West Valley because of the tragic nature of the events and the involvement of young children. Investigators have not yet publicly discussed any potential motives or prior domestic incidents connected to the family.
