A man was killed early Thursday morning after being struck by a vehicle on Interstate 17 in north Phoenix following an initial crash. Authorities say the incident began when a vehicle crashed into a median wall along the freeway.
According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the crash happened around 3:25 a.m. near Union Hills Drive. After the initial collision, the driver exited the vehicle while still on the freeway. At that point, he was hit by another passing vehicle.
Officials confirmed that the man, who was in his 60s, died at the scene as a result of being struck.
The driver of the second vehicle involved in the incident was taken to the hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
The incident led to a major traffic disruption in the area. Northbound lanes of I-17 were shut down for several hours while authorities investigated and cleared the scene. Drivers were diverted off the freeway at Union Hills Drive and Yorkshire Road, which caused a significant backup as traffic was rerouted and vehicles were turned around.
After several hours, the roadway was fully reopened at approximately 8:25 a.m., allowing traffic to resume normal flow.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing as authorities continue to review the circumstances surrounding both the initial collision and the fatal incident that followed.
