A hands-on pottery experience is being offered in downtown Mesa through the Saturday Hand-Building Pottery Workshop at Greenbelt Plants & Pottery. This beginner-friendly class invites participants to explore working with clay in a relaxed and creative environment, making it accessible for people of all skill levels.
The workshop is scheduled to take place on multiple Saturdays throughout April, including April 4, April 11, April 18, and April 25, with each session running from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The event is held at Greenbelt Succulents & Cacti, located at 31 South Robson Street, providing a unique setting surrounded by plants, pottery, and local artistry.
During the workshop, participants will use slab-building techniques to create their own custom ceramic piece. Attendees have the flexibility to design something functional, decorative, or completely unique based on their personal style and creativity. The class is structured to guide participants through each step of the process, ensuring a supportive and engaging experience.
With instruction provided throughout the session, participants will learn essential hand-building pottery skills such as cutting clay, using slip and scoring techniques to join pieces, shaping forms, and applying finishing touches. In addition, attendees will be able to personalize their creations by adding texture and underglaze decoration before their pieces are fired in a kiln.
The workshop is designed to remain small in size, allowing for a more hands-on and personalized learning experience. Organizers recommend planning for at least two and a half hours to complete the project, though the exact time may vary depending on each participant’s pace and design choices.
After the class, the finished pieces go through a multi-step process that includes drying, bisque firing, glazing, and final firing. Because of this, completed items will not be immediately available and are typically ready for pickup within three to four weeks.
All materials needed for the workshop are included, and no prior experience is required, making it an approachable and creative activity for anyone interested in trying pottery. The event offers a chance for participants to learn new skills, express their creativity, and walk away with a handmade ceramic piece crafted entirely by them.
