Trader Joe’s has pulled several frozen meals from shelves nationwide after reports that some products may contain small pieces of glass. Federal officials say the recall now covers more than 36 million pounds of ready‑to‑eat and frozen chicken and pork fried rice, ramen, and shu mai dumpling products manufactured by Ajinomoto Foods North America.
Scope of the Recall
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that 36,987,575 pounds of food are affected, including items sold under multiple brand names. Four Trader Joe’s products are included:
• Chicken Fried Rice
• Vegetable Fried Rice
• Japanese‑Style Fried Rice
• Chicken Shu Mai
All recalled items fall within specific “best by” date ranges extending into 2027.
Ajinomoto’s expanded recall follows earlier complaints from consumers who reported finding glass in frozen chicken fried rice. Investigators believe the contamination may be linked to a vegetable ingredient used across multiple products. No injuries have been confirmed.
What Consumers Should Do
Federal food‑safety officials warn that some recalled items may still be in home freezers. Customers are urged not to eat the products. Instead, they should discard them or return them to any Trader Joe’s location for a full refund.
Trader Joe’s says it is acting “out of an abundance of caution” and continues to work with federal regulators as the investigation continues.
