Amazon is preparing to close several of its Amazon Go and Amazon Fresh grocery stores nationwide as the company shifts its retail strategy and invests more heavily in expanding Whole Foods Market.The company confirmed that underperforming Amazon Go convenience stores and Amazon Fresh locations will be shuttered as part of a broader restructuring of its physical retail operations.
Amazon did not release a full list of affected stores, but closures are expected in multiple states.Despite the pullback, Amazon emphasized that it remains committed to the grocery sector.
Executives said the company will focus on strengthening Whole Foods Market, which Amazon acquired in 2017, and will continue opening new Whole Foods locations in select markets.The company is also evaluating updates to its Amazon Fresh format, including redesigned layouts and improved product offerings. Some existing Fresh stores may be remodeled rather than closed.
Amazon’s physical retail division has undergone several rounds of changes in recent years, including the closure of its Amazon Books and 4-Star stores. Company leaders say the latest moves are intended to streamline operations and concentrate resources on the most successful and scalable formats.
