Flagstaff is preparing for a major celebration this summer as the city honors the 100th anniversary of historic Route 66 with a large community event packed with entertainment, art, music, food, and family activities.
The free Route 66 Centennial Celebration is scheduled for June 6, 2026, and organizers say the event will transform downtown Flagstaff into a daylong tribute to the iconic “Mother Road,” which officially turns 100 years old this year.
According to Discover Flagstaff, the celebration will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will feature activities spread throughout Heritage Square, Gateway Plaza, the Visitor Center, and the Flagstaff Mall. Organizers say the citywide event is designed to celebrate both the history and cultural impact of Route 66, which continues attracting travelers from around the world nearly a century after it was established.
Event organizers say visitors can expect a wide variety of entertainment and interactive attractions during the celebration. Planned activities include live music performances, large-scale 3D street art installations, axe throwing, balloon art, face painting, keychain making stations, cupcake giveaways, and coloring activities for children.
The celebration will also include an Indigenous art market highlighting Native artists and vendors from the region. Storytelling activities with the Flagstaff bookmobile are planned as well, giving families and children opportunities to learn more about Route 66 history and Northern Arizona culture.
Discover Flagstaff says the centennial event is intended to honor the major role Route 66 played in shaping Flagstaff’s tourism economy, identity, and historic downtown district. The famous highway helped establish Flagstaff as a key destination for travelers crossing the American Southwest and remains one of the city’s most recognizable attractions today.
Organizers are encouraging visitors to spend the weekend exploring local restaurants, breweries, hotels, shops, and historic Route 66 landmarks throughout the city while attending the celebration. Flagstaff remains one of the few Arizona communities where large stretches of the original Route 66 alignment still run directly through downtown.
Tourism officials say the centennial celebration is expected to draw visitors from across Arizona and around the country, particularly longtime Route 66 enthusiasts interested in commemorating the highway’s historic milestone.
Route 66 was officially established in 1926 and became one of the nation’s most famous highways, stretching from Chicago to Santa Monica. Over the decades, the roadway became deeply connected to American road trip culture, small-town tourism, and westward travel across the United States.
Discover Flagstaff says the June event is designed to celebrate both nostalgia and community while introducing younger generations to the lasting legacy of the Mother Road.
