A fire at a north Phoenix apartment complex left multiple units damaged and displaced several residents after flames tore through part of the building Wednesday morning.
The fire broke out shortly after 10 a.m. at the Tesoro Apartments near 19th Avenue and Butler Drive, just south of Dunlap Avenue. When Phoenix firefighters arrived at the scene, they found heavy smoke pouring from the second floor of the two-story apartment complex.
Because of the size of the building and the amount of smoke and fire visible when crews arrived, the incident was quickly upgraded to a first-alarm fire, bringing in additional firefighters and resources to help contain the flames.
Firefighters stretched hose lines into the building and attacked the fire from inside the complex in an effort to stop the flames from spreading further. Crews worked aggressively to contain the blaze and limit additional damage to neighboring units.
According to Phoenix Fire officials, a total of 16 apartment units were affected by the fire. Authorities said it was still unclear exactly how many people would ultimately be displaced as a result of the damage.
Despite the extent of the fire and the damage to the building, officials confirmed that no residents or firefighters were injured during the incident.
Investigators have not yet released what caused the fire, and the investigation remains ongoing as crews continue assessing the damage and working with affected residents.
