A Valley man is preparing to graduate for the first time in his life after overcoming homelessness, health struggles, and years of hardship.
Addist Bennett’s story highlights how quickly life can unravel. After suffering a hernia while working, he was no longer able to keep his job. That single setback triggered a chain reaction that led to him losing his apartment, his identification, and eventually his sense of stability. The pain from the injury was so severe that it sometimes left him unable to function.
At nearly 60 years old, Bennett found himself homeless, pushing a cart and relying on community kitchens for food. He recalled never imagining his life would reach that point. During one particularly painful episode, he collapsed near the top of a stairwell and woke up at the bottom, unsure of what had happened. While he was unconscious, someone took his belongings, leaving him with even less than before.
Within about six months, his situation had deteriorated completely. Despite everything, Bennett said he leaned on faith and focused on finding the strength to keep going, even during his lowest moments.
Climbing out of homelessness took years. During that time, Bennett became so familiar with local resources that he was even featured in materials for Chandler’s homeless services. A turning point came when he began volunteering with the Salvation Army, which eventually connected him to Circle the City, an organization that helps people experiencing homelessness access healthcare.
Step by step, Bennett began rebuilding his life. Once his health improved, he enrolled at Gateway Community College, where he studied HVAC systems, controls, and security. While still pursuing his education, he secured a job as a surveillance technician through a partnership with Johnson Controls.
Bennett describes himself as someone who refuses to give up, comparing his resilience to a weed growing through concrete. He says no matter what happens, he is determined to survive and continue moving forward.
Now approaching his 60th birthday, Bennett is on track to earn his associate degree by the fall. Walking across the stage will mark a major milestone, as it will be the first time in his life he has graduated.
His journey serves as a powerful reminder of how quickly circumstances can change, but also how persistence, support, and determination can help someone rebuild their life from the ground up.
