The Arizona Science Center is offering Valley residents a rare chance to step back nearly 2,000 years with Pompeii: The Exhibition, now in its final weeks at the Sybil B. Harrington Gallery on Level 3. The limited‑engagement showcase runs through April 12, 2026, marking the final stop on its North American tour.
Featuring more than 150 artifacts on loan from the Naples National Archaeological Museum and the Archaeological Park of Pompeii, the exhibition traces the daily life—and sudden destruction—of the ancient Roman city buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius on August 24, 79 A.D.
A Journey Into a Lost City
Visitors begin with an introductory theater presentation that sets the scene with dramatic reconstructions of Pompeii and its looming volcano. From there, guests enter a recreated Roman villa atrium and move through immersive environments depicting markets, temples, baths, and other key locations of the once‑thriving port city.
The exhibition blends projections, audio, video, murals, and reproduced frescoes with authentic artifacts, including:
• Intricately preserved mosaics and frescoes
• Gladiator helmets, armor, and weapons
• Household items such as lamps, jugs, cookware, and furniture
• Jewelry, medical tools, and everyday objects
• A ship’s anchor and other maritime pieces
A simulated eruption experience leads to one of the exhibition’s most striking elements: full body casts of Pompeii residents, frozen in their final moments as ash and toxic gases overtook the city.
Educational Opportunities
The Science Center offers free educator guides aligned with Arizona Standards for elementary through high school students. Field trip groups can explore the exhibition’s 4‑D Eruption Theater and examine artifacts excavated from beneath eight feet of volcanic ash. Sensitive areas, such as the Roman brothel display, are clearly marked and can be bypassed.
