A powerful early-season heat wave in Arizona is forcing adjustments to the Cactus League schedule, including a game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers being pushed back to later in the day. Officials say the change is necessary as the Phoenix area prepares for unusually high temperatures that could reach as high as 105 degrees, far above what is typical for this time of year.
Because of the extreme heat, several spring training games that are normally played in the early afternoon are being moved to evening start times when temperatures are expected to be cooler. The Diamondbacks and Brewers matchup, originally scheduled for the afternoon, has been shifted to a 6:10 p.m. start at Salt River Fields.
In total, at least seven Cactus League games have been adjusted due to the heat wave. These include multiple matchups across different stadiums in the Valley, all moved to evening time slots around 6 p.m. to help protect players, staff, and fans from the most intense heat of the day.
The extreme weather is notable because Phoenix typically does not see triple-digit temperatures until early May. Entering this year, the earliest recorded 100-degree day in the city was March 26, making this heat wave unusually early and potentially record-breaking.
Most Cactus League games are usually scheduled to begin around 1:05 or 1:10 p.m., with only occasional evening games. However, with the forecast calling for dangerously high temperatures, league officials and teams are adjusting schedules to prioritize safety.
Organizers are also encouraging fans attending games to take precautions, including staying hydrated, seeking shade when possible, and wearing protective clothing such as hats and sunglasses. Some ballparks are making additional accommodations to help attendees stay cool during the extreme conditions.
These schedule changes highlight how significantly the early heat wave is impacting events across the Valley, as organizers work to adapt and ensure a safer experience for everyone involved.
