Authorities in southern Arizona are searching for 84‑year‑old Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” show co‑anchor Savannah Guthrie, after she disappeared from her Catalina Foothills home over the weekend. Investigators say the circumstances surrounding her disappearance are suspicious, and the residence is now being treated as a crime scene.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Monday that detectives found “concerning” evidence inside the home, prompting the shift from a search‑and‑rescue operation to a criminal investigation. “We do in fact have a crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime,” Nanos said, urging neighbors to review any home‑security footage from Saturday night and early Sunday.
According to the sheriff’s office, Nancy Guthrie was last seen at 9:30 p.m. Saturday. When she failed to appear at church the next morning, family members went to her home, searched for her, and called 911.
Authorities emphasized that Guthrie, who lives alone, has limited mobility and requires daily medication, making it unlikely she left the home on her own. She does not have cognitive issues, Nanos said. “She is as sharp as a tack. This is not someone who wandered off.
A missing‑person bulletin describes Guthrie as 5 feet 5 inches tall, 150 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes.
Investigators are reviewing security footage from inside the home, analyzing Guthrie’s cellphone, and checking neighborhood surveillance systems, including license‑plate readers. The FBI is assisting in the case.
Search crews initially deployed helicopters, drones, and heat‑sensing equipment, but those teams have since been pulled back as the focus shifts to forensic investigation.
Savannah Guthrie issued a statement Monday thanking the public for its support. “Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom,” she said, urging anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities say there is no indication the public is at risk, but they have not ruled out whether Guthrie was targeted.
