A man is in custody after causing damage at the Ohio home of U.S. Vice President JD Vance early Monday morning, according to authorities. The U.S. Secret Service reported that the incident took place just after midnight at Vance’s residence in the East Walnut Hills neighborhood of Cincinnati while the vice president and his family were away in Washington, D.C.
Secret Service agents first observed suspicious activity at the property and detained the individual, who was then taken into custody by the Cincinnati Police Department. Law enforcement says the man caused property damage, including breaking multiple windows at the residence. A Secret Service spokesperson said the agency is working with local police and the U.S. Attorney’s Office to determine appropriate charges.
Court records and local reports identify the suspect as 26-year-old William DeFoor of Crestview Hills, Kentucky. DeFoor is accused of several offenses including criminal damaging, criminal trespass, obstructing official business, and vandalism for his actions at the home. According to nearby police dispatch accounts, a Secret Service agent saw DeFoor on Vance’s property damaging at least four windows and also harming a vehicle.
DeFoor has a prior record that includes a vandalism conviction in 2023, after which he was ordered to receive mental health treatment. That case also involved other legal difficulties and a period in which he was ruled mentally incompetent to stand trial on a separate trespassing charge.
In a social media post, Vice President Vance thanked the Secret Service and Cincinnati police for their prompt response. He said the individual appeared to be acting erratically and that he and his family were not home at the time of the incident. Vance also asked the media to respect his family’s privacy following the property damage.
The Secret Service says it does not yet know whether the incident was targeted specifically at Vance or his family as the investigation continues.
