In a heartwarming milestone, World War II veteran John “Jack” Schuessler
celebrated his 100th birthday on Christmas Eve, surrounded by family, friends, and fellow veterans in Mesa, Arizona.
Born in 1925, Schuessler served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, enlisting at just 17 years old. He was stationed aboard the USS LST-218, a tank landing ship that supported Allied operations in the Pacific Theater. His service included missions in the Philippines and Okinawa, where he witnessed some of the war’s most intense battles.
A Celebration of Service and Longevity
The birthday celebration was held at the Arizona State Veterans Home, where Schuessler now resides. Staff and loved ones decorated the facility with patriotic banners and holiday cheer, honoring both his military service and his century of life.
“He’s a hero to all of us,” said one caregiver. “To reach 100 years old and still have such a sharp wit and warm spirit is truly inspiring.”
Reflections from a Remarkable Life
Schuessler shared memories of his time in the Navy, recalling the camaraderie among sailors and the challenges of wartime service. He also expressed gratitude for the life he’s lived since returning home—from raising a family to staying active in veterans’ organizations.
“I’ve had a good life,” he said. “I’m thankful for every day.”
